Part 6) one long lovely dream Oooh-la-la Lisbon – such loveliness everywhere I don't know where to begin! In sum, I was living a dream where I was a little boy, with my improved photography skills being a shiny new toy. One afternoon I suddenly found myself at the top of my game. Part 5) everything starts coming together Norther Part 5) everything starts coming together Northern Spain was cold, wet and dreary. Upon crossing the border into Portugal, the skies cleared and the sun came out. My first day in Porto I did what I do whenever possible: visit the waterfront and more rundown neighborhoods. And all at once, in two clicks, everything I'd been working on came together BOOM, just like that! (A couplathree others from my time there and in Coimbra are also fairly decent.)

I have no idea why; too much Hitchcock, probably. It's real hard sometimes, and very frustrating! But in Barcelona, while taking photos of Gaudi's Guell Palace, the Italian gal I was palling around with laughed and laughed at my conniptions. Then she said, "Why don't you just start incorporating them – it'll add years to your life!" Huh, I thought, that's a good point. Several months later, I broke this ingrained habit in Toledo and Segovia. Very liberating, letting subjects walk into a picture!
Part 3) capturing color & light Years ago, I read Part 3) capturing color & light Years ago, I read the correspondence between Van Gogh and his brother, Theo. In one of his letters Vincent used the word "long" to describe the yellow he was driven to capture. Since everybody else may call that shade "deep," his description always fascinated me. Valencia is where I began to find it, as well as sunlight's true power. And rest assured, dear reader, I lost myself (both literally and figuratively) in that discovery while traveling throughout Southern Spain. Good times.
